    Engine Problems We Repair

Not every engine problem means the engine has to be replaced, and not every symptom is an engine failure. We confirm the cause with testing before recommending a repair.

    Head gasket repair

Head gasket failure can show up as coolant loss, overheating, or combustion gases in the cooling system. We confirm the failure with testing before recommending the repair.

Timing chain and timing component repair

Timing chains, guides, tensioners, and related components wear over time. We inspect and repair timing components when testing points to them.

    Internal engine repair

We perform internal engine repair when the damage is contained and the rest of the engine is in serviceable condition.

    Oil leak repair

Engine oil leaks are repaired at the source once we identify where the oil is actually coming from.

    Overheating-related engine damage

Overheating can damage gaskets and internal components. We test the cooling system and the engine to determine what was affected.

Engine misfires with a mechanical cause

Not every misfire is an engine failure. When testing shows a mechanical cause such as low compression, we address the engine itself.

How We Decide Repair vs Replacement

The decision is not a rule of thumb. It depends on the actual damage found, the results of testing, the overall condition of the vehicle, whether a suitable engine is available, and how the cost of repair compares to the cost of replacement. We go through all of that with you before anything is approved.

    Tests we use when appropriate

    • Compression testing
    • Leak-down testing
    • Cooling-system pressure testing
    • Oil-pressure testing
    • Borescope inspection

    Engine Replacement Options

We do not rebuild engines in-house. When an engine needs to be replaced, there are three paths:

    Used engine sourced by us

We locate a used engine that matches your vehicle's specifications and install it. Availability and condition vary by vehicle.

    Remanufactured engine sourced by us

Remanufactured engines are rebuilt to specification by the manufacturer or supplier. We source and install them when that is the better long-term option.

    Customer-supplied engine installation

If you have already purchased an engine, we can install it. Warranty coverage on the engine itself depends on the seller or supplier you purchased it from. We will explain what coverage, if any, applies to the installation/labor before work begins.

    Engine Warranty Coverage

Warranty coverage on a replacement engine varies depending on the engine and the supplier. Depending on the option you choose, coverage can include both the engine and the labor. Because the terms are not the same for every engine, we review the exact warranty coverage with you before installation begins so there is no confusion about what is and is not covered.

    What the Process Looks Like

    1. Diagnose and inspect

We test the engine to determine what actually failed instead of guessing from symptoms.

    2. Explain findings and options

We walk you through what we found and whether repair or replacement makes sense for your vehicle.

    3. Estimate and approval

You get a clear estimate. No work begins until you approve it.

    4. Repair or source and install

We perform the engine repair, or source and install a used, remanufactured, or customer-supplied engine.

    5. Final checks

We verify operation, check for leaks, and confirm the engine is running correctly before the vehicle goes back to you.

When Check Engine Light Diagnostics Is the Better Starting Point

If you have a warning light on, a misfire, rough running, or a drivability problem and nobody has established that there is major engine damage, the right first step is diagnostics rather than engine work. Many of those problems turn out not to be engine failures at all.

    Engine Repair FAQs

Should I repair or replace my engine?

It depends on the actual damage, the test results, the condition of the rest of the vehicle, engine availability, and how repair cost compares to replacement cost. We test the engine first and then explain both options before any work begins.

    Do you rebuild engines?

No. We do not rebuild engines in-house. We perform engine repair, and when an engine needs to be replaced we source and install used or remanufactured engines.

    Do you install used engines?

Yes. We source used engines that match your vehicle's specifications and install them. Availability and condition vary depending on the vehicle.

    Do you install remanufactured engines?

Yes. We source and install remanufactured engines, which are rebuilt to specification by the manufacturer or supplier.

Can I supply my own engine?

Yes. We install customer-supplied engines. Warranty coverage on the engine itself depends on the seller or supplier you purchased it from. We will explain what coverage, if any, applies to the installation/labor before work begins.

Is there a warranty on engine replacement?

Warranty coverage varies by engine and supplier and can include both the engine and the labor. We review the exact warranty terms with you before installation so you know what is covered.

What tests do you use to diagnose an engine?

Depending on the symptoms, we may use compression testing, leak-down testing, cooling-system pressure testing, oil-pressure testing, and borescope inspection.

What vehicles do you work on?

We work on most cars, SUVs, vans, and light trucks. If you are unsure whether your vehicle is a fit, give us a call.

How much does engine repair or replacement cost?

Cost depends on the diagnosis, the engine involved, and the labor required. We provide a clear estimate after diagnosis and before any work begins.
